Everyone has their struggles they go through, whether it’s drugs, alcohol, depression, and the list goes on. The hip hop culture doesn’t often talk about mental health issues, so songs like “I’m Sorry” by Joyner Lucas, “U” by Kendrick Lamar, “1-800-273-8255” by Logic and “Smile” by Jay Z, (just to name a few) are easily embraced by fans, despite the darker messages. Seattle artist, Mafi D, dropped his single, “Mental Health” last year, and now we have Tacoma artist, Tay Vation adding to the mix of these with a new single, “Drownin.”
As the song began, I had to hit pause. Tay Vation may be speaking on her own personal struggles, but this song is relatable to anyone who has dealt with addiction and depression before. The song begins with the hook that will catch your attention immediately, but the first verse
is what really hits hard. “I done had one too much to drink (shit). My eyes blurry I cant even hardly think (shit). My heart tellin’ me no but my mind tellin’ me yes. But this pain won’t go away like it’s glued to my chest. I don’t even know where to start. One day I’m good and the next
I’m fallin’ apart….” Throughout the song, Tay Vation speaks on the reasons she drinks, but also states it doesn’t help ease any of the pain. This is no doubt a feeling we all go through when we take one too many shots.
The video, directed by SideShow, begins with drone shots over Tacoma before cutting to Vation rapping on some railroad tracks as she takes sips from a big cup. The video isn’t too intricate, which is perfect in making people really listen to the lyrics.
This song is intense, deep, and a must add to the playlist if you value important messages. Mental health awareness is important, and I salute Tay Vation for speaking on her own demons to help others process theirs.
